Warrington has topped a list of the 10 council areas with the most contaminated land, new research reveals.

A freedom of information request sent to 71 local authorities found that Warrington borough has 1759 sites across 41,603,277 square meters of contaminated land. This represents 23% of the borough.

The Liverpool borough of Sefton secured a second spot on the list with a combined 975,050 square meters of contaminated land. Hillingdon came in third with 700,000 square meters.

Sent by the ductwork, extraction and fabrication specialists Airmatic, the FOI requests also found that Scotland only had one site in the top 10, with the rest of the top spots being taken by English boroughs.

The rest of the council areas in the top 10 were as follows: Waverley (382,000 square metres), Mendip (280,000), Gateshead (243,000), West Dunbartonshire (180,000), Hull (163,578), Herefordshire (156,000), and Calderdale (137,000).
