Social services directors report unprecedented demand for help

Directors of adult social services have reported a sharp rise in demand in the wake of the pandemic, according to a new survey.

Research by the Association of Directors of Adult Social Services (ADASS) shows 82% of those surveyed report rising demand for help from people being discharged from hospital.

Nearly seven in ten (69%) have seen an increase in cases of domestic abuse, while 63% report a growing number of people needing help after losing regular support from unpaid carers.

ADASS president, James Bullion, said: ‘This report paints a stark picture of how the pandemic has affected millions of us who have care and support needs, or who care for a family member who does.

’For the first time, we have hard evidence of the scale and breadth of the impact of Covid-19 on those of us who are working-age disabled people, older people, family members, and carers.’

ADASS is calling for adult social care to be prioritised in this week’s spending review, including multi-year funding settlements.
