Local authorities in the South East paid £64,555 in compensation to staff injured during school violence from 2019/20 to 2023/24, an investigation has revealed.

Kent County Council and Surrey County Council paid £25,000 and £10,375 respectively after pupils assaulted staff at their schools, the BBC found.

Both East Sussex County Council and Medway Council also had to pay compensation – £22,000 and £7,180 respectively – to staff for breaking up fights between pupils.

The latest figures also show a 35% increase in pupil suspensions for assaults on adults in 2023/24.
