The skyline of the City of London is set to be transformed with the erection of a new 74-storey tower, which is the same height as the Shard, Western Europe’s tallest building.

The City of London Corporation’s Planning Applications-Sub Committee on Friday approved the proposal for the 309.6m high office tower known as 1 Undershaft.

The new development, which will sit between the ‘Gherkin’ and the Leadenhall building, will replace the existing 28-storey Aviva Tower.

Chairman of the City of London Corporation’s Planning and Transportation Committee, Shravan Joshi, said the building would deliver ‘high-quality office space’ and contribute to the City’s ‘growing cultural offer and tourist appeal.’

It will also feature a public garden on its 11th floor and an education centre, delivered in partnership with the London Museum.
