The new Labour Government should ‘commit early to the Northern Powerhouse’, says the mayor of Greater Manchester.

Speaking to the BBC, Andy Burnham said he believed Labour's election win could lead to a ‘great era for the English cities and regions’.

He also urged Prime Minister Starmer to ‘move on really quickly’ with plans for a railway that could cut journey times to Liverpool by about 25 minutes.

North East Mayor Kim McGuinness also today wrote to the Prime Minister ahead of a meeting between the PM and metro mayors tomorrow to urge Labour to go further and faster on devolution.

She added: ‘I have set out practical and immediate steps the new administration can take to make progress on the issues crucial to our region's future. I believe with more of a say for local people and more decisions made in the region, we’ll be best equipped to create opportunity and fight child poverty.’
