Nearly two-thirds of the public are not engaged with local government reorganisation, a new poll commissioned ahead of the local elections has revealed.

The Ipsos research commissioned by the Local Government Information Unit (LGIU) found that 63% were not following closely or at all the Government’s overhaul of local government.

The online survey of 1,805 adults in England also revealed there was no consensus support for unitary authorities over the two-tier model they are set to replace.

Just short of 40% of respondents said a combination of district and county councils works best, while 26% preferred single unitary authorities.

Directly elected mayors are viewed in a relatively positive light, according to the poll, with 43% of respondents saying they give a voice to local areas in Westminster.
