A borough councillor in Lancashire owes almost £4,000 in council tax, making him unable to vote on the authority’s budget.

Tom Ormerod owes Pendle Borough Council £3,835 from the past three years, local news outlet The Lancashire Lead revealed.

Confirming the figure, the local authority said the arrears meant Cllr Ormerod was unable to vote at any meeting where financial matters relating to council tax were considered, as set out in the Local Government Finance Act 1992.

It has also been revealed that Cllr Ormerod, who was elected to the council in May 2023, has attended just two committee meetings and one full council meeting since December that year.

Pendle noted that a councillor who fails to attend meetings for six months would automatically lose their position, unless the non-attendance was approved by the council.

Liberal Democrat group leader David Whipp said: ‘Residents in Pendle are being very badly let down by a councillor who's just not representing them.’

Cllr Ormerod and the Conservative group have been contacted for comment.
