Council reduces workforce by 138 to balance budget

Over 130 Bath and North East Somerset Council workers have been made redundant at a cost to the council of £4.75m.

In December 2017, the local authority committed itself to reducing its workforce of 2,000 by 300 in order to deliver the 2018-20 budget.

The following February the council approved staff savings of £8m over 2018/19 and 2019/20, bringing the total amount of savings with staffing implications to £11m.

A report from the authority’s Resources Scrutiny Panel has revealed that to date there have been 138 voluntary and compulsory redundancies.

It is projected this will cost the council £4.75 over a two-year period in redundancies payments, but it will create annual savings of £4.28m.
